Football jigs are truly versatile. To me, they are one of the most exciting, effective jigs for bass all year round, in shallow or deep water, anywhere in the world.

In this installment, allow me to share with you my perspective and tips on football jig selection and presentation styles for shallow water urban ponds during the prespawn period in Hangzhou, eastern China.

I have caught bass in strange places but never one as bizarre as this floating restaurant in Hangzhou, eastern China.

My local contact, John Jiang of Kimple Boats, China, caught a 4lb’er beneath one of those air conditioning compressor units on a 1/2-oz football jig.

The football jig, in my opinion, is a truly versatile lure for bass in urban waters. It's the one lure that you can use in deep, shallow, clear or muddy water and catch fish all year round. I've fished on urban ponds in France and China and I can tell you that there's always a jig fishing situation in urban, man-made environments.

In this article, I'm going to cover some basic jig fishing tips such as jig size, profile and color selection. In the next instalment, Part 2, we'll talk about presentation and retrieve styles.

So, if you heading out to that local pond, make sure you don't leave home without some football jigs in your tacklebox.

Lure Vision Magazine (January and February 2015): Hamburg Special

Surprise, surprise... I came home and found these magazines in my mailbox. Big thanks to editor-in-chief of Lure Vision magazine, Mr. David Wang. My cover stories for the months of January and February 2015 on tidal perch fishing in Hamburg, Germany are physically here at last.

I've said it before and I'll say it again... I've had a blast catching quality perch in Hamburg and I'm looking forward to fishing there again with my friend Dustin because we'd really smoked those perch, from shallow to deep water, on spinnerbaits and finesse Texas-rigged worms. Our strategy worked and we read the tide perfectly. Though we didn't catch a load of fish, we made sure we caught the right ones. Tidal perch fishing is totally unlike what I've experienced before and I really learned a lot during those few days.

All in all, I had a great time fishing with really nice, sincere and friendly people. Thank you all for sharing your awesome fishery.

Check out these pictures from my articles. Thanks for reading.

That's the best perch-catching spinnerbait I've seen (period). Dustin was catching perch that I just couldn't catch with my spinnerbaits.

I really enjoyed fishing with Dustin and Dawid. In fact, Dawid caught a monster perch on one of my spinnerbaits, a couple of days after I'd left. I wished I'd stayed on longer.

I caught this decent size tidal perch on finesse Texas-rigged 3.5" craw on a riprap bank.
