5 degrees and still frozen!

Went out fishing in the afternoon. Ambient temperature was 5 degree Celsius but the slow flowing parts of the river were still frozen! But, I guess the ice will soon melt in a day or two. I started fishing with a 1/4 oz finesse with a craw trailer but there were no bites and later changed to a 3" beaver and got the first bite of the day. I set the hook hard and something big could be felt at the other end of the line, most probably a big perch. After a short fight, the hook came off. Argh... Unfortunately, the hook didn't go through despite setting the hook really hard. When I reel in the bait, I realized that one of the 'claws' had actually prevented the hook tip from making contact with the fish. Well, at least I know that there's still some large perch around here :)

Nice view from under the arch of of bridge and also where I lost a big one. Damn...

After loosing the perch, I decided to make my way up river to a stretch where I can find big perch. The conditions weren't great. the melting ice had caused the river to swell and the water was coloured. Fishing the shallows for perch was probably the last thing on my mind because most of them are probably in the warmer deeper parts of the river. After a few tries, it was time to move on. Still using the same 3" beaver, I pitched the lure before I could even see the mouth of the stream. As soon as it hit the water, there was a hit and this time, I wasn't going to fail. In comes the slack line and upon setting the hook, I could feel something big. I wished it was a perch but soon realized that it was a chub instead. It was also my first chub caught on a non reaction bait. I normally catch chubs with spinnerbaits.

You guess the hit point?

This time, the shallows are just not worth fishing.
