Cold front anyone?

The weather outlook of the past 12 hours (source: Met Office Weather U.K)

A common definition of a cold front is as follows: “A narrow zone of transition between relatively cold, dense air that is advancing and relatively warm, less dense air that is retreating.” Whatever that means, it’s a weather occurrence that can shut down fish and cause severe headache for an angler. Fishing will be tough and there’s no two ways about it. But, it is possible to catch some if you are prepared to alter your delivery. That is how Justin Hoffman of Ontario Fishing Network puts it. From personal experience, fishing under a cold front is usually deemed very difficult. After years of fishing in such conditions, I have to admit that I am still as puzzled as before.

The sky was predominantly cloudy and it was quite windy.

In all, that was the outlook for most of today. The high pressure that until recently lay centred over the country has moved westwards to allow a cold front to sink southwards. This will progressively introduce cloudier and cooler conditions over the coming days. I’m not an expert when it comes to reading weather charts, but I do know for sure that fishing is bound to be slow.

Surprise, surprise... a chunky pike on a spinnerbait.

The only fish of the day, a 5 lb pike. Something is better than nothing.

The badly 'beat-up' but yet reliable 1/4 single willow spinnerbait.

I was fishing at the Beeston Canal in Nottingham and all I could manage was a 5 lb pike which surprisingly put up quite a good fight. The fish was caught near a weed bed on a slow rolled single willow spinnerbait. After that, it felt like a complete shutdown. There were no follows or hits. Everything just went silent. Unfortunately, the weather outlook for the coming week is bleak. I guess I’ll just have to brave another cold summer spell. That’s fishing and you just have to take whatever the weather throws at you and make the best out of it.

The canal flood wall.

Thanks for reading, as always.
