Unplanned fishing

Ever heard of an 'unplanned' fishing trip? Well, you're about to hear one in brief. This happened one day when I was back in Malaysia for a holiday. We were tackle shop hopping in town when one of us suggested that we should go fishing. This came out of the blue and nothing was planned. The first place that sprang to mind was the Sungai Pinang estuary river. Actually, it's not the cleanest of rivers but there's certainly fish in it. The targeted species was none other than the Indo-Pacific tarpon. So, off we went, without any proper tackle. If I could recall, we had just a handful of hard body lures (jerk baits and topwaters) and two light baitcasting combos and that was it. Although we were quite poorly equipped, we made the most out of the conditions.

John with a decent size Indo-Pacific tarpon from the colored river. The fish was caught on a Rapala Skitter Pop.

Before I even had my tackle ready, John had caught and released two tarpons. By the time my lure hit the water, he'd just lost a good size barramundi! In no time, he's caught a small mangrove jack. Considering the adverse weather conditions (torrential downpour), we fared quite well, if only John could have landed that barramundi! As for me, I was quite contented with the couple of tarpons and the small mangrove jack.

My first mangrove jack from the wild. The fish was caught on a Yo-zuri Mag Minnow Stream.

No fish were hard during the making of this report. Always practise catch and release.
