The Exeter excursion

This baby pike barely bigger than the swimbait was my one and only fish of the day. Conditions-wise, it was clear blue skies but we were fishing in typhoon-like high winds.

I've always wanted to fish the freshwater canals in the South-west of England and that happened for me over the holidays, a time when most of the country was inconveniently plagued by the winter floods. The timing couldn't have been better for my first ever Exeter excursion. But, on the positive side of things, I was in good company of fellow Nice Fish! pro-staff Matt Newcombe and Ecogear UK field-tester Luke Fox. Speaking of fishing, I was glad to know that all three of us were practically tuning onto the same frequency. And, despite knowing what we were going up against, for that instance the weather, nothing was ever going to stop us from hitting the water.

Our trip down to the canal had actually hit a snag first thing in the day because most of the roads were practically underwater. So, we were left with no choice but to continue the long journey on foot. For the record, it was probably one of my longest walk with three rods and a bag full of gear. Weather-wise, the start to the day wasn't great either. As soon as the skies cleared, the wind picked up with great force. For most of the day, we were battling gale force winds as we moved along the bank.

Considering the adverse conditions, I had a feeling that the fishing was simply going to be dead slow and I was right. Over the course of the morning, we were struggling for bites. It wasn't well until midday for us to put something down on the score card. Even so, in terms of both size and numbers, it wasn't that great. Apart from the double hook-up by Matt and Luke, which was the ultimate highlight of the day, the rest of the catch were sadly nowhere near the usual this canal has to offer. But, that's fishing.

As the marina came within sight, it gave us a sense of hope that we'd re-write the scorecard. But sadly, that wasn't the case. Speaking of which, we must have dropped baits at all the imaginable spots at the marina but caught none still. Though baitfish were abound in vast numbers at parts of the marina, those predators were no where to be found. We endured what was possibly the windiest conditions I've ever fished for years, did what was in and out of the lure fishing textbook only to conclude the trip with half a dozen of small pike. In all, we must have hacked all the visible cover, fished almost every structure, beat the weedline but on that occasion the fish were just having a day off or something.

It looked like a fine day in this picture. But, waves were developing at most parts of the canal.

A double hook-up for Nice Fish! pro-staff Matt Newcombe and Ecogear UK field-tester Luke Fox. Those were two of the biggest pike of the day at a canal where monster pike roam.

Jigging at the marina yielded nothing but a few bites on a day severely affected by high winds.

A picturesque viewpoint at the marina where we'd though catching a few perch was possible.
