The 'Bass' of China

Cover page of Rod&Line (Malaysia) sport angling magazine, January 2013.

And finally, after months in the publication queue, the first of my 'Fishing China' article is now featured in the January '13 Rod&Line (Malaysia). As always, many thanks to editor-in-chief and long time fishing friend Mr. C.S Fong for the complimentary copies.

A decent size black bass on a Duel Hardcore Jerk.

This is actually the first of a seven-part in-depth Fishing China series which I've written for R&L. In this first article, I've had the opportunity to fish with FLW China Qualifiers champion Wang Zheng and ex-FLW Stren Series (Western Division) co-angler Thomas Wang and they are among top anglers in the tournament bass fishing scene in Eastern China. Well, for a 'small-timer' like me, it's been an honor for me to fish with them on the same boat.

As an angler, I've been to China once but never actually did any form of fishing till then. Frankly, I was surprised by how well some of the bass fisheries are managed and also the level of skills exhibited by some anglers. Within less than a decade, the bass fishing industry in China has definitely hit the right notes but there is still plenty of room for improvement in this vast country.

This is the first of seven articles in the Fishing China series for R&L magazine.

Though I enjoyed the fishing there, those bass that I've caught were some of the smartest fish ever. In fact, I'd never once thought that the angling pressure could be so immense over there. If it was not for the local knowledge of Wang Zheng and Thomas Wang, I could have easily caught none. According to popular belief of the anglers there, most of the big bass at that particular fishery have been caught and released at least once. Technically speaking, the number of bass anglers in China could well outnumber the bass fish stocks!

Stay tuned and watch out for Part 2 of the Fishing China series in the next issue which should be available next week newsstands and bookstores in Malaysia, Singapore and South East Asia.

As always, thank you for reading.
