Whopper perch

Early morning start at the canal in Nottingham. The weather but it was really cold. Don't let the sunny conditions fool you.

It’s been a while since I caught a good size perch, those 40cm and over. Fortunately, my dry spell sort of ended this morning at a canal somewhere in Nottingham, thanks to Sharky. We were hacking the reeds on the opposite bank. Within just a few casts, I could see a good size perch tailing my spinnerbait. Unfortunately, its killer instincts weren’t there. And I thought to myself, “It’s going to be one of those days again”. It better not be...

Caught this whopper perch not long after. The fish was caught on a custom order 1/4 oz single willow spinnerbait. (Picture by Sharky)

What could have done that? A monster pike? (Picture by Sharky)

However, within two more casts to that particular point… bang! This time, something must have clicked. The fish (possibly the same one) inhaled the spinnerbait right under my nose. I decided that I wasn’t going to loose the fish and ended up winching it out of the water. It was mission accomplish! Although no weight or length measurements were taken, the fish was definitely over 40cm and about 2 lbs. In a way, it felt like a bass. How I wish there were more of these 40cm and over perch in the waterways in the East Midlands.

One of the 'fishy' looking spots but there were no takers.

Another 'fishy' looking spot...

On the tackle side of things, I was using my MH spinnerbait combo which consists of the Majorcraft Days (DC-662MH) and my trusty Deps ZDV100H reel spooled with 30 lb PowerPro braided line. The lure is none other than a custom order ¼ oz single willow yellow-chartreuse spinnerbait. Although that may seem like ‘overkill’ for perch, it was actually meant for pike fishing. But hey, who cares. I got the fish and that’s what counts. On my return trip, I’ll be downsizing my tackle and that’s for sure. So, it's back the the 1/8 oz version.

The weapon of the day. The 1/4 oz single willow spinnerbait.

Thanks for reading.
